Geopolitics
A ceasefire agreement was reached between Israel and Hamas. The agreement aims to halt hostilities and facilitate humanitarian aid in Gaza, beginning with an immediate ceasefire followed by the phased release of hostages and detainees. Over 500 trucks of aid per day are expected to enter Gaza, significantly boosting relief efforts. The deal, mediated by the U.S., Egypt, and Qatar, also sets the stage for future negotiations aimed at a permanent end to the conflict, with these countries acting as guarantors to ensure compliance and facilitate a sustainable peace.
Moscow reported that Ukraine launched a significant attack using U.S.-made ATACMS ballistic missiles, UK-made Storm Shadow cruise missiles, and over 140 drones into Russia. This escalation follows Ukraine’s initial use of these weapons against Russia last year, which prompted Russia to respond with a new missile. The Russian Defense Ministry claims to have intercepted all missiles and drones aimed at the Bryansk region. This ongoing conflict intensifies as global tensions rise, with calls for ceasefires and negotiations to address the war’s devastating impact.
South Korea’s impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol has been formally arrested following his attempt to impose martial law, sparking significant unrest and clashes involving his supporters and the police at Seoul Western District Court. This unrest resulted in property damage and numerous arrests. The court decided on Yoon’s arrest after an eight-hour deliberation, citing concerns about evidence tampering. This situation escalates South Korea’s political crisis, with Yoon facing serious charges potentially leading to a lengthy imprisonment if convicted.
The Call
Gold had a strong week last week and feels like it is about to break out to the upside, testing the 2800.00 handle. With Donald Trumps agenda starting with his inauguration today, it is time to get the darts out. Without knowing what he will do, it is anyone’s guess. We would lean towards a range widening between 2600.00 and 2800.00. We expect gold to move higher during the next few months but there could be a small pullback first. There will be a large amount of information to digest so the call would be remain nimble!
