Geopolitics
President Donald Trump expressed frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin, threatening to impose secondary tariffs on buyers of Russian oil if Moscow hinders efforts to resolve the Ukraine conflict. Trump criticized Putin following remarks undermining Ukrainian President Zelenskyy’s leadership. Trump’s potential tariffs could range from 25% to 50% and would apply to any entity involved in purchasing Russian oil, aiming to exert economic pressure. These measures are Trump’s response to the ongoing war in Ukraine and perceived obstruction from Russia.
Hamas has approved a ceasefire proposal mediated by Egypt, which includes forming a community support committee to govern Gaza. This committee, proposed to consist of independent figures, would take full responsibility for the Strip across all areas upon an agreement. Meanwhile, Israel has submitted a counterproposal and intensified military pressure on Hamas. The details of the ceasefire are still under negotiation, with involvement from both Israel and the United States, aiming to facilitate the release of hostages and stabilize the region.
A severe 7.7-magnitude earthquake and aftershocks struck Myanmar, devastating areas near Mandalay and impacting neighboring Thailand. The quake caused extensive casualties and destruction, with the death toll surpassing 1,600. Myanmar’s military has declared a state of emergency in several regions and is coordinating rescue efforts. International aid, including from India and ASEAN, is being mobilized to assist the affected regions. The disaster poses a significant challenge to Myanmar, already strained by civil conflict and humanitarian needs.
The Call
Last week we saw another record all-time high for gold, which hit 3124.40 for the June contract. We expect the price of gold to follow through to the upside with gold testing 3200.00-3250.00 early in the week. What is unknown will be the extent of the Trump tariffs and the end of the week U.S. jobs and unemployment report. We should see a very volatile week with these major economic events taking place with the possibility of an easing in tensions. We see 3000.00 as strong support for gold for the time being.
