Frequently Asked Questions by Downsizers

How long do transactions take?

Transactions will typically take between 15-30 minutes – depending on the nature and quantity of the items brought in. During this time, our staff assess and test items to identify purity and value. Items such as coins and bars take much less time to identify and value.

How will I be paid?

We can settle payments in cash, cheque, direct deposit or wire transfers. We can pay you out in either Canadian Dollars or US Dollars.

How can I save time during this transaction?

Although not necessary, separating your items by category (bowls, cutlery, knives etc.) will save us time sorting while you are in our office. We always recommend calling ahead of time to notify our staff if you have a larger collection of items so we can ensure that an associate can personally handle your group upon arrival.

When do transactions require paperwork or ID?

We require identification from any individual conducting transactions where, within a 24-hour period, we receive a Cash total of $10,000.00 CAD or more, or its equivalent in USD. Identification is also required from any client receiving payment by bank transfer or cheque. Additionally, we require identification for repeat customers and for those conducting transactions on behalf of a company.

What is weighted silver?

Weighted silver is simply the addition of a heavy substance, such as wax or cement, to what is normally a small amount of silver. This process provides balance and structural support to various items such as candlesticks, knives, trophies, bowls and dishes, salt and pepper shakers, and handheld mirrors. Does it matter if my items are broken or mismatched?

No! Whether your items come in perfectly polished or have been collecting dust for a decade Guardian will happily quote you a price for the item regardless of condition or completeness.

Are there minimums of silver or gold I must bring in?

No minimums, no maximums- whenever you need liquidity we are here for you.

What is the Assay Process? Do you have to melt my gold?

We do not melt all metals on site, but we do melt Gold Scrap to ensure an accurate reading and weight. Read more about our Assay process.

How do you determine the purity of gold and silver?

To get the best value for our clients, we analyze all purchased metals with regularly calibrated, state of the art ElvaX-XRF Analyzer desktop energy-dispersive X-ray fluorescence EDXRF analyzer spectrometer for accurate precious metals content. This leaves no question as to the purity of your metals and guarantees that the payment will be based solely on the precious metals content. Our process is transparent and you can be satisfied knowing that there will be no hidden brokerage, transaction, or assay fees.

Do I have to open an account to deal with Guardian?

Opening an account is not necessary unless you are looking to do recurring business or business on behalf of a company.

When is it a good time to sell my silver or gold?

We recommend consulting your financial advisor for investment advice that’s appropriate for your specific needs.

How will I be paid?

Traditionally, most of our clients deal receive payment in cash, however we do offer other payment options such as bank transfers and cheques

What kinds of silver/gold does Guardian Gold NOT buy?

We do not purchase silver-plated, gold-plated or “filled” items. The cost of recovering the metal content in these pieces is greater than the value of the metal. If you have pieces that you no longer want, we recommend donating them to someone who will use them or selling them on an online marketplace.
Additionally, we do not buy precious or semi-precious stones, rocks, or sedimentary materials.
