Geopolitics
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukrainian forces are holding their position in Russia’s Kursk region, countering Russian claims of encirclement. He indicated potential Russian intentions to attack Ukraine’s Sumy region. Despite President Trump’s claim of Ukrainian troops being surrounded, Zelenskyy dismissed it as false. Amidst intensified Russian assaults, discussions for a ceasefire continue, complicated by Putin’s conditions and Trump’s call for sparing encircled Ukrainian troops. Ukraine remains committed to a ceasefire, accusing Russia of complicating negotiations.
At a G7 meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Canadian Foreign Minister Mélanie Joly clashed over the characterization of U.S.-Canada trade relations. Rubio denied a trade war, describing the U.S.’s actions as a reset for equitable global trade. In contrast, Joly accused the U.S. of engaging in a trade war and threatened strong countermeasures. The dispute overshadowed other G7 agenda items, including discussions on Ukraine and China, amidst chilly relations and literal cold weather at the meeting venue in La Malbaie, Quebec.
Mark Carney, former central banker, has been elected as Canada’s next prime minister by the Liberal Party, succeeding Justin Trudeau who announced his resignation earlier this year. Carney, known for his effective leadership during financial crises both in Canada and the UK, secured 85.9% of the vote amid tensions with the U.S., including trade issues and controversial statements by President Trump. His election arrives at a critical time as Canada faces an upcoming federal election and heightened nationalism in response to U.S. policies and rhetoric.
