Geopolitics
President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan has accused Russia of unintentionally shooting down an Azerbaijani airliner, urging Moscow to apologize, admit guilt, and compensate the victims. The crash, which occurred in Kazakhstan, resulted in the deaths of 38 of the 67 people onboard. Aliyev criticized Russia’s initial silence and misleading explanations post-incident. This incident has strained relations, although Russia’s President Vladimir Putin has apologized, describing the event as a “tragic incident” but not fully accepting responsibility.
In South Korea, a catastrophic plane crash at Muan International Airport resulted in 179 deaths with only two survivors. Jeju Air Flight 2216, en route from Bangkok, faced complications during an emergency landing due to a reported bird strike. Investigations are probing whether the bird strike was linked to the crash and why the plane’s landing gear failed to deploy. Family members of the victims are seeking answers and have gathered at the airport, where demands for a formal apology, compensation, and the handling of the victims’ remains are being made.
Israel’s Defense Minister, Israel Katz, confirmed that Israel was responsible for the assassination of Hamas’ top leader, Ismail Haniyeh, who died in an explosion in Iran last July. Katz’s statement also included targeted comments towards the Houthi leadership in Yemen, indicating similar actions could be taken against them as part of Israel’s broader strategy against Iranian-aligned forces in the region. The Houthis have been launching attacks on Israel, including a recent missile that wounded several in Tel Aviv. In response, Israel has conducted multiple airstrikes in Yemen and plans to intensify these efforts to halt further attacks.
The Call
We expect gold to see a relatively quiet beginning this week awaiting the New Years holiday. Thursday will start the return to business as usual and volatility will pick up. Early range on gold looks like 2570.00 to 2650.00. A break above 2650.00 and gold will rally to test 2750.00. A break below 2570.00 and gold will test 2550.00. We are still bullish with the target on gold around 3000.00 next year.
