Geopolitics
The Biden administration has introduced new export controls targeting advanced technologies such as quantum computing and semiconductor equipment. These measures, motivated by national security and foreign policy considerations, aim to prevent adversarial use of these technologies. The controls include specific components and software linked to metals and high-bandwidth chips essential for AI applications. The U.S. is working with international partners to align these restrictions, and a public comment period of 60 days will precede the final rule.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that a ceasefire with Hamas is not imminent, contradicting U.S. officials who claimed a deal was close. He emphasized that his stance has hardened, particularly after the recent killing of six hostages by Hamas. Netanyahu reiterated that any deal must allow Israeli forces to maintain a presence in the Philadelphi corridor to prevent arms smuggling. The U.S. continues to negotiate, but no agreement has been reached, with significant issues including the terms of hostage exchanges and the repositioning of Israeli forces.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated in an interview that Ukraine plans to indefinitely hold Russian territories it recently seized to pressure President Vladimir Putin into negotiations. He clarified that Ukraine does not intend to impose its way of life on these areas but needs to hold them as part of a strategy to end the war. The operation in Russia’s Kursk region was a surprise and highly secretive, even within Ukrainian circles, to enhance its success. Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine did not inform international partners, including the U.S., about the incursion in advance.
Brazil’s federal supreme court has unanimously upheld orders to suspend the use of Elon Musk’s social network, X, across the country. This decision includes a controversial measure that permits fines for individuals or businesses attempting to bypass the suspension, such as using VPNs. The suspension was initially ordered after X failed to comply with court requests to remove content violating Brazil’s laws on political misinformation and hate speech. In response, Musk criticized the court’s actions as “illegal” and intensified his rhetoric against Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who issued the suspension orders.
The Call
Gold had a steady week chopping either side of the 2500.00 spot price and we expect the same results this week with a modest drop in prices to a low around 2440.00 – 2460.00. The price will most likely stay reasonably steady around the 2500.00 mark until the FOMC interest rate announcement on September 18th. Silver did not fare as well as gold and the gold/silver ratio widen out over 89 ounces for 1 ounce of gold. Not a positive situation for silver. We look for a little weakness going into the FOMC and then a continued rally later this month.
Last Week in Review
Gold opened on Sunday evening at 2505.20 and moved lower into Tuesday morning hitting 2473.50 before bouncing to just under 2500.00. Gold then dipped again on Wednesday to make the weekly low at 2471.80 and then started rallying back up to hit the weekly high of 2528.90 when the employment numbers came out Friday morning at 8:30 A.M. Gold then sold off finishing the week at 2496.10. As we mentioned in last weeks call, gold seems balanced around 2500.00 per ounce as we wait for the Feds interest rate announcement a week from Wednesday.
Silver opened Sunday night at 28.87 and immediately moved lower into Monday and further down on Tuesday before bouncing to make the weekly high of 29.18 on Thursday mornings employment numbers. From here, silver traded sideways waiting for Fridays nonfarm payrolls and like gold sold off on the weak numbers to make the weekly low of 27.64 before closing a little higher at 27.90. This puts the gold /silver ratio at 89.4 to 1.
- The U.S. Dollar Index was a little weaker this week and finished at 101.18.
- The Gold/Silver Ratio widened out this week, from 86.798 ounces to 89.465 ounces of silver for 1 ounce of gold.
