Jan. 19/26 Update to Silver Purchases

We are Buying ONLY SELECT Silver Until Further Notice

January 19, 2026

As of today we are now purchasing:

  • All silver bullion from LBMA certified makers.
  • 50 Ounce and smaller bullion from non-LBMA makers.

Our silver refining partners in Canada have temporarily frozen their payment mechanisms. This is a global issue in response to current market stressors. Elevated lease rates on silver have now made it impossible for Guardian to settle transactions under normal terms.

At this time we cannot purchase these silver products:

  • Jewellery
  • Silver flatware, tableware, and collectible items
  • Any Coinage
  • Non-LBMA certified makers bullion larger than 50 oz

These are temporary measures. Unfortunately, we cannot predict when circumstances will change, however, we will review this policy as conditions stabilize. We appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

How Gold Testing Works: Why XRF Scanning Is the Most Accurate Method

XRF Scanner for Gold Testing

When someone decides to sell gold – whether it’s a single piece of jewellery, a handful of mixed items, or a larger lot from a business – the first question is always the same: “How do you test my gold?”

It’s a fair question. Proper gold testing is the foundation of an honest transaction, and understanding how your gold is evaluated gives you confidence that you’re getting a fair payout. At Guardian Gold, we use one testing method exclusively: XRF scanning. It is the most accurate and reliable way to determine the purity and composition of gold and other precious metals.

This blog explains how gold testing works, why XRF scanning is the industry standard, and what you can do at home to better understand your gold before bringing it in.

1. Why Gold Testing Matters

Gold value is determined by three factors:

  • Purity (karat level)
  • Weight
  • Live market price

Of those three, purity is the one sellers understand the least – and the one where mistakes or guesswork can cost real money.

Accurate gold testing protects both the seller and the buyer by establishing a clear, verified purity measurement. That’s why choosing the right testing method matters.

2. What Is an XRF Scanner?

XRF stands for X-ray fluorescence, a technology widely used in precious metals, mining, manufacturing, and scientific fields. An XRF scanner sends a low-energy X-ray into the metal, which causes each element to emit a unique fluorescent signature.

In simple terms:
XRF identifies exactly what your item is made of – instantly and without damaging it.

An XRF reading can show:

  • Gold percentage
  • Silver content
  • Alloy metals (copper, nickel, zinc, etc.)
  • Plating or surface metals
  • Every detectable element present in the piece

This allows for extremely accurate purity measurement down to decimal places, not just general karat levels.

3. Why Guardian Gold Uses XRF Only

Many buyers use older methods like scratch testing or acid testing, which can be inconsistent or even damaging to items. At Guardian Gold, we rely exclusively on XRF scanning for several reasons:

✔ Non-destructive

No scratching, filing, or acid exposure. Your item remains fully intact.

✔ Highly accurate

XRF provides precise elemental analysis – not a rough visual estimate or reaction test.

✔ Consistent results

Unlike acid testing, which varies based on technique or interpretation, XRF readings are standardized and repeatable.

✔ Ideal for mixed alloys and soldered items

Jewellery often contains different alloys or components; XRF detects everything present on the scanned surface.

✔ Fast and transparent

The reading appears immediately, and we explain the results to you on the spot.

Our commitment to accuracy is one of the main reasons jewellery stores, pawn shop proprietors, estate dealers, and individuals choose Guardian Gold as their preferred precious metal buyer.

4. What Sellers Can Do at Home Before Visiting

While XRF is the most reliable method for determining purity, there are simple things you can do at home to get a general sense of what you have.

These steps aren’t precise and shouldn’t be used for valuation – but they help set expectations:

🔹 Check for hallmarks (karat stamps)

Common Markings Include:

10K
14K
18K
22K
24K
417 (10K)
585 (14K)
750 (18K)

Just remember: markings can be worn, misleading, or incorrect.

🔹 Magnet test

Gold isn’t magnetic, so if something sticks to a magnet, it’s plated or not gold.
(Not a purity test – just a quick filter.)

🔹 Visual inspection

Worn plating, discoloration, or greenish areas may indicate low gold content or plating.

🔹 Simple acid test kits

Some sellers use these at home, but results vary wildly and can damage items.
We don’t recommend using them on high-value jewellery, though they can sometimes help identify plated pieces.

These at-home methods help you understand what you’re selling, but XRF remains the only reliable, professional standard for gold testing – and the method we use for every transaction.

5. What to Expect When You Bring Gold to Guardian Gold

We keep the process simple, transparent, and efficient:

✔ Step 1 – Melt and Initial Assessment

At Guardian Gold, all gold we purchase is melted into a bar before final valuation. This process ensures complete accuracy by removing any uncertainty about plating, fillers, or mixed alloys. Melting eliminates the risk of paying for gold that isn’t actually present and guarantees that the final assay reflects the true, combined purity of the entire lot. Whether your items are different karats, mixed with solder, or contain plated pieces, melting provides a precise and reliable basis for your payout.

✔ Step 2 – XRF Testing

Each melted bar is scanned using our XRF analyzer.
We show you the results and explain:

  • Karat level
  • Actual gold percentage
  • Other metals present

✔ Step 3 – Weighing

We weigh your gold in front of you on one of our certified precision Mettler Toledo scales. When gold jewellery is melted, a small reduction in weight can occur as impurities or non-precious metals burn off. This does not affect the accuracy of our gold testing process or the final determination of your gold’s purity.

✔ Step 4 – Payout Based on Live Market Prices

Your payout is calculated using:
purity × weight × live gold price
This ensures your valuation is tied directly to the global market.

We melt the items into a single bar for a uniform purity reading. This provides an averaged purity for mixed-karat gold, ensuring you’re paid exactly what the material is worth – never less.

6. Why Accurate Testing Makes a Difference

Even a small difference in purity can significantly change your payout.
For example:

  • 14K gold = 58.5% gold
  • 18K gold = 75% gold

If testing is off by even 1–2 karat levels, it could mean losing hundreds of dollars on a typical lot.

XRF removes that risk by providing clear, precise data.

For wholesale clients – including jewellers, pawn shops, cash-for-gold operators, and estate buyers – this accuracy is essential. High-volume sellers need consistent, reliable readings they can trust.

Final Thoughts

Gold testing doesn’t have to be complicated. With XRF scanning, sellers get a transparent, accurate measurement of their gold’s purity – without damage or guesswork.

Whether you’re selling a single ring or a bulk lot, Guardian Gold uses the most advanced and trusted testing method available, ensuring you receive a fair and accurate payout every time.
